Parte 4: Longotermismo

Na primeira e segunda sequências, discutimos formas de quantificar o impacto das intervenções altruístas. Na terceira, discutimos formas de estender a consideração moral a mais grupos, incluindo pessoas das gerações futuras.

A maior parte das análises de custo-eficácia apenas contabiliza os efeitos a curto termo de uma intervenção, e não os efeitos a longo termo. Porque estes últimos podem ser muito mais impactantes e porque as “pessoas do futuro” que afectam terão vidas tão valiosas como as nossas, algumas pessoas vêem esta atenção no curto termo como um assunto essencial.

Nestes posts, exploramos uma abordagem diferente para encontrar intervenções: o “longotermismo“, que exige que nos concentremos em melhorar a trajectória a longo termo da civilização humana.

  • We usually act as though the future matters less than today. Many institutions apply “discount rates” to the future as a way to formalize that view. But strange things happen if we assume even a 1% annual discount rate for social benefits.
